My routine for fixing stubborn nail damage

I picked up a nasty case of athlete’s foot at my local gym about three years ago, and it eventually migrated under my big toenails.

For a long time, I followed the standard advice you see everywhere. I tried soaking my feet in vinegar every night for twenty minutes, which just made my skin peel and smelled terrible. Then I moved on to those tiny bottles of tea tree oil. While it helped the itch temporarily, it was incredibly drying and never seemed to actually reach the fungus living under the nail plate. I even tried the menthol rub trick under my socks at night, but all that did was ruin a few pairs of good cotton socks without showing any real progress on the yellowing.

About four months ago, I shifted my focus toward building up the skin’s resistance rather than just attacking it with harsh acids. I started using ProNail Complex (i get it here, discounted!) as part of a very strict daily routine. I made sure to dry my feet with a separate towel—or even a hairdryer on the cool setting—before applying anything. This specific spray felt different because it’s an oil-based mist with vitamins, so it didn’t just sit on the surface like a thick cream. It actually felt like it was soaking into the nail bed and the surrounding skin.

My minimal routine now is just a quick spray after every shower and making sure I rotate my shoes so they dry out completely. By the end of the second month, the base of my nail started growing in clear and the skin didn’t look so angry and red anymore. It’s definitely not a miracle that works in a week, and you have to be consistent every single day to see a difference. If you have a severe infection, obviously see a podiatrist, but for my stubborn, lingering case, focusing on skin and nail resistance was the turning point.

The vinegar soaks are the worst. My bathroom smelled like a salad for a month and my heels started cracking from the acidity. Never again.

The hairdryer tip is actually solid. Moisture is the enemy with this stuff. Do you use the spray on your skin too or just the nails?

I’ve been trying the tea tree oil thing for six months and I’m seeing zero progress. It’s frustrating how much ‘natural’ advice just doesn’t work for deep nail issues.

I finally started seeing some pink nail bed again after using ProNail Complex for about ten weeks. You really do have to be patient though.

The gym shower is exactly where I got mine too. I never go in there without flip flops now. Lesson learned the hard way.

I can vouch for ProNail Complex as well. I’m on my third bottle and it’s the only thing that stopped my skin from flaking between my toes every summer.

That’s exactly why I went with ProNail Complex instead. Those lacquers create a thick layer that traps moisture underneath, which felt counterproductive. The mist absorbs almost instantly and doesn’t leave that weird plastic-like coating on the nail.

How did you decide on that specific mist vs those paint-on lacquers you get at the drug store? I tried a lacquer once and it just peeled off in the shower.

Glad you found something that works. Nail issues take forever to grow out, so 3-4 months sounds like a realistic timeline.

How many pairs of shoes do you rotate? I usually just stick to one pair of boots for work but maybe that’s my problem.
