My brother underwent surgery to turn his brown eyes green, and now he's experiencing severe vision issues

I apologize if my English isn’t perfect. It’s not my native language, and I rarely write in it, though I speak it more frequently. My brother had an operation to change his eye color from brown to green. I didn’t even know such a procedure existed until he mentioned it. His eyes were healthy; there was no medical reason for the surgery, only the desire for green eyes. Since it’s illegal in our country, he went to America for it. At first, he seemed fine, but now he’s having major issues. He’s developed a severe sensitivity to light and has to wear special glasses in bright settings. He also claims his vision has significantly worsened. He can no longer work or drive. Every specialist he’s visited says the damage is irreversible. I am so angry. He didn’t need this surgery at all. Now he’s dependent on me and our mother. My father is a stroke survivor who needs help, and my other brother has autism and can’t live on his own. It was already difficult for us. I wish he’d never done it. I don’t want to be a bad brother, but I’m furious because it was such a foolish thing to do. It wasn’t necessary.

That’s really rough, I’m so sorry.

It’s even more tragic considering colored contacts are an option.

Is that kind of surgery even legal in the US? I find it hard to believe a board-certified doctor there would actually perform it. I could be wrong, though.

What kind of procedure did he actually pay for? If it was those iris implants, that’s a nightmare.

I honestly thought that was illegal, and it’s heartbreaking to hear it’s not. It’s an incredibly dangerous surgery. I feel for your brother, but the surgeon is entirely to blame. I have no respect for doctors who gamble with their patients’ sight like that.

I’m sending healing thoughts to your brother, hoping his vision can recover and that it’s just sensitivity for now. Wishing the best for you and your family.

How long has it been since this reckless surgery? Have you personally spoken with any of the doctors? Can they see the damage, and do they think it might improve as he heals? I’m sorry your brother has added to your family’s burden for such a vain reason. Eye color? You have important responsibilities. Help your mother and your other brother and try to ignore the selfish one as much as possible. His needs should definitely come last. Don’t let yourself worry about him; you can’t afford to. He needs to figure out how to help himself. I’m sorry he’s suffering, but your duty is to your mother. What was he thinking? And where did he get the money for this ridiculous operation instead of helping you and his mother? It’s incredibly selfish. I’m sorry, OP, but you have to distance yourself from his problems.

Imagine having to travel to a third-world country like the US for such a sketchy operation.

So he wanted green eyes so badly that he traveled abroad and accepted the risks without considering how it would affect everyone else? Focus on helping your mother with your father and your other brother; they didn’t choose their struggles. Your other brother made a choice, and now he has to deal with it. You aren’t a bad brother; he’s the one being selfish and putting a burden on the whole family.
