I’ve noticed lately that the standard yellow bulbs in my living room just aren’t cutting it anymore. I was constantly straining to see my knitting or even just reading the morning paper.
I recently swapped my old floor lamp bulbs for 5000K “daylight” LED bulbs, and what a difference it makes! Everything looks so much crisper and the colors are truer. I also added a battery-powered motion light under my kitchen cabinets for safer meal prep.
Has anyone else found small lighting tweaks that help around the house? I’d love to hear your setups!

This is such a helpful thread. I’m going to the hardware store today to get some of those 5000K bulbs. Thank you for the tip!

My eye doctor actually suggested increasing the contrast in the house too. Like having a dark mat under a white plate so it’s easier to see the edges. Lighting is half the battle, but contrast helps too!

I just bought a rechargeable neck light for reading in bed. It looks a bit silly but it directs the light exactly where I need it without bothering my husband.

Don’t forget about natural light! Keeping the windows clean makes a bigger difference than you’d think. I also swapped my heavy curtains for sheer ones to let more sun in during the day.

I found that matte finishes on my desk helped a lot. I used to have a glass top desk and the reflection from my overhead light was blinding me. I put a large desk mat down and it solved the problem instantly.

@BudgetShopper I’ve had good luck with the Philips Ultra Definition line. They are supposed to be easier on the eyes and the color rendering is excellent. A bit more expensive but worth it for the lack of flicker.

Does anyone have a brand of bulb they prefer? Some of the cheap LEDs I bought last year started flickering after just a few months.

I recommend plug-in nightlights for the hallways and bathrooms. Not the tiny dim ones, but the ones that actually cast a decent glow on the floor. It prevents trips if you have to get up in the middle of the night.

Getting older certainly makes you realize how much we took good vision for granted! I’m definitely going to look into those daylight LEDs this weekend.

I got one of those floor lamps with the built-in magnifying glass for my model airplanes. It has an adjustable brightness setting which is perfect because my eyes seem to need different levels of light depending on the time of day.

Be careful with the glare though. If you have glossy countertops or glass tables, those bright LEDs can bounce right back into your eyes and cause spots.

Great point about the kitchen cabinets. I actually put some strip lighting inside my pantry too. No more digging around for cans in the dark!

I struggle with the blue light from those daylight bulbs sometimes, they feel a bit harsh on my eyes late at night. I found that using a dedicated ‘warm’ task lamp specifically for reading works better for me than changing the whole room.

The daylight bulbs are a game changer! I did the same in my workshop last month and I can actually see the measurements on my tape measure again without squinting.
