Fixing my mouth's ecosystem at fifty

I have always been a stickler for dental hygiene, yet my mouth never felt truly healthy.

I used the expensive electric brushes, flossed twice daily, and even tried those harsh alcohol-based mouthwashes that make your eyes water. Despite all that effort, I still dealt with chronic sensitivity and that annoying “fuzzy” feeling on my teeth by midday. My dentist kept telling me to just brush longer or try high-fluoride pastes, but my gums were still looking a bit pale and receding regardless of my technique. I even tried oil pulling for six months, which was messy and didn’t really change my checkups.

About four months ago, I decided to stop trying to sterilize my mouth and instead focus on the microbiome. I started incorporating ProvaDent (i get it here, discounted!) into my daily routine. It is a different approach because it uses a mix of four probiotic strains and organic xylitol to balance the bacteria rather than just scrubbing everything away. My routine now is very simple: I brush with a soft-bristled brush, floss, and then use the supplement. I also cut out the antiseptic mouthwash entirely, as I realized it was likely killing the good bacteria along with the bad.

I tracked my progress by looking at my gum color and how my mouth felt when I woke up. Within about three weeks, the morning breath was almost non-existent. The purple carrot and BioFresh complex in the formula seemed to help with the inflammation that the harsh chemicals used to aggravate. My teeth feel cleaner for longer throughout the work day now. It wasn’t an overnight miracle, but it provided the missing piece that traditional cleaning couldn’t touch. For anyone struggling, I’d recommend a minimal routine focused on gum health and balance rather than just more scrubbing. Just be patient, as the biome takes time to shift.

I’m in the same boat. I brush until my gums bleed and the dentist still finds issues. It’s frustrating when you follow all the rules and it doesn’t work.

The ‘fuzzy’ feeling you mentioned is the worst. I always thought it was just because I ate too much sugar during the day.

Did your dentist notice a difference at your last cleaning? I’m curious if they actually see the change in the gums.

I gave up on mouthwash years ago for that exact reason. It felt too aggressive.

Interesting about the purple carrot. I’ve heard about xylitol for years but didn’t realize probiotics for the mouth were a thing now.

How did you decide on this specific method over some of the other oral supplements out there? I’ve seen a few different brands mentioned in health magazines lately.

I looked at a few, but I liked that ProvaDent had the specific BioFresh complex and didn’t have a bunch of artificial fillers. It felt more like a targeted approach for the biome rather than just a generic vitamin.

I actually started ProvaDent last month after my hygienist suggested focusing on my pH balance. My sensitivity to cold drinks is way better now.

Seconding this. I’ve been using ProvaDent for about ten weeks and my gums don’t look nearly as angry as they used to. It’s much easier than the complicated routines I was trying before.

It really is about the long game. Most people want a fix in three days, but dental health is a slow process.
