What I tried before
I spent my late 30s and early 40s throwing every active ingredient at my face. I was using high-strength retinol every single night, followed by a vitamin C serum every morning. I thought if it didn’t sting a little, it wasn’t working. Instead, my face stayed red and flaky.
What I changed
My skin finally hit a breaking point where even basic moisturizer burned. I decided to strip everything back. I stopped all actives for six weeks and focused solely on lipid replenishment. I switched to a very bland, soap-free cleanser and a thick cream with ceramides and fatty acids.
Week-by-week
The first week was hard because I felt “congested” without my exfoliants. By week three, the constant redness around my nose disappeared. By week six, my skin felt soft again, not like parchment paper.
What improved
The biggest change is the bounce. My skin looks hydrated from within, and those tiny crinkles around my eyes have softened significantly because they aren’t so dry.
What didn’t
My deeper forehead wrinkles are still there, but they don’t look as harsh now that the surrounding skin isn’t so inflamed.

I think so many of us in this age group fall into the ‘more is better’ trap. I definitely did.
Which ceramide cream did you end up liking? I’m looking for a new one that isn’t too greasy.
Stopping the morning vitamin C was the hardest part for me, but my rosacea finally calmed down when I did.

I did a similar ‘reset’ last year. It’s amazing how much of what we think is aging is actually just chronic irritation.

How did you handle the congestion in that first week? I always panic and reach for the scrub.

@DermQuery I just used a warm washcloth very gently. You have to resist the urge to scrub!

This is great advice. I’m 52 and just realized I was using three different products with exfoliating acids in them without even knowing it.
Did you go back to using retinol after the six weeks were up?
@MorningCoffeeSkin I started back once a week with a much lower percentage. No more daily use for me.

The ‘sting’ is definitely not a sign of success. I wish I had known that ten years ago.
I’ve been using a soap-free cleanser for a month now and my skin feels so much less tight after washing. It really makes a difference.
Great post. Simple is almost always better as we get older.

I’m curious about the ‘congested’ feeling. Did you break out at all during the transition?

Not really a breakout, just felt like my skin was thicker or ‘dull’ for a few days until it balanced out.
Thanks for sharing this. I’ve been over-exfoliating for months trying to fix ‘dryness’ that was actually just a damaged barrier. Starting my reset tonight.
