Do we really need a juice cleanse to detoxify our digestive systems?

I’ve been seeing so many ads lately for expensive “juice cleanses” that promise to reset your gut and flush out toxins. At our age, it’s tempting to look for a quick fix when things feel sluggish, but let’s look at the reality. Your body actually comes with its own built-in detox team: the liver and the kidneys. They work 24/7 without needing a $50 bottle of green juice.

Drinking nothing but juice can actually be tough on your digestion because you’re stripping away the fiber. For those of us over 50, fiber is our best friend for keeping things moving and feeding the good bacteria. When you juice a fruit, you’re mostly getting the sugar and leaving the best parts behind.

Instead of a “cleanse,” I’ve found that just adding more whole vegetables and staying hydrated does a much better job. Has anyone else fallen for the juice trend only to feel worse afterward? I’d love to hear your experiences.

Spot on. My daughter tried to get me on a three-day liquid fast last year. I lasted until lunch on day one because I felt so lightheaded and cranky. Just eating a big salad makes me feel much better.

What about those “green powders” you see everywhere? Are they just as bad as the juices or do they actually have the fiber left in them?

I tried one of those cleanses a few years back thinking it would help my bloating. It actually made it ten times worse. All that concentrated sugar without the pulp really messed with my system. Never again.

Retired RN here. You hit the nail on the head. We spend so much money trying to do what our organs already do for free. If you want to help your “detox” process, just drink more water and cut back on the processed salt.

Fiber is king at our age!

I prefer making smoothies instead of juicing. At least that way I’m keeping the skin and the pulp of the fruit in the drink. It’s much more filling and easier on the blood sugar.

Great post. It’s easy to get sucked into the marketing when you’re tired of feeling heavy. Thanks for the reminder to keep it simple.
