Cutting out specific trigger foods made a huge difference

Before: I’ve dealt with HSV-1 for over twenty years. It started in my late twenties and honestly, it felt like I was getting a massive blister on my lip every time I had a big presentation at work or got a minor cold. It was predictable in the worst way and really damaged my confidence during my 30s.

What I tried: I spent a fortune on every over-the-counter cream and patch available. I was taking high doses of lysine daily and lived on suppressive antivirals for three years. While the pills helped, I still got breakthrough sores that took forever to heal even with the medication.

The switch: About a year ago, I started tracking my diet alongside my outbreaks. I realized my healthy habit of eating a large handful of almonds and a daily protein shake was likely the culprit. The high arginine in nuts and seeds was completely offsetting any lysine I took. I cut out almonds, peanuts, and chocolate almost entirely, and switched to a diet higher in dairy and fish.

After: It’s been eight months and I haven’t had a single full-blown blister. I still get that familiar tingle occasionally when I’m exhausted, but I just use my prescription for two days and it disappears before anything surfaces. My skin finally feels normal again.

The arginine and lysine balance is so overlooked by doctors. Glad you finally found some relief.

I had the exact same issue with peanut butter. It was my favorite snack but it was absolutely killing my progress. Once I stopped, things cleared up fast.

Did you have to give up chocolate completely? That sounds like a really tough trade-off for me, but maybe worth it if the results are that good.

I’m 52 and just started noticing that coffee might be a trigger for me too. Has anyone else experienced that? I’m wondering if it’s the acidity or the caffeine stress.

I found that stress management was the bigger piece for me personally, but diet definitely plays a huge role when the immune system is already down from work pressure.

The switch to dairy really helps because of the ratio. I drink way more milk now and it seems to keep things at bay much better than the pills alone did.

Thank you for sharing this. I honestly never thought about my protein shakes being the problem. I just checked the label and they are loaded with pea protein and seeds.

I still use the clear patches for the tingle just in case, but I agree that the internal stuff is more important long-term for preventing the flare in the first place.

Does anyone know if walnuts are as bad as almonds? I’ve heard conflicting things about the different types of nuts.
