After five years of nightly foot discomfort I finally found a routine

I’ve been dealing with that annoying “electric” sensation in my feet for over five years now. It usually hits hardest right when I’m trying to wind down for bed. Like many of you, I spent a lot of time and money trying to find something that would actually make a difference.

What I tried before

I started with high-dose B12 and standard multivitamins. They helped a tiny bit with my energy, but that stinging feeling in my toes didn’t budge. I also tried various cooling creams and even those expensive compression socks, but those were mostly just temporary fixes that didn’t address the underlying issue.

What I changed

About four months ago, I decided to try a more targeted antioxidant approach. I started taking a supplement called Nervala (usually discouted here) which combines 600mg of Alpha Lipoic Acid with Benfotiamine. I was skeptical because I’d tried ALA before in smaller doses, but this extra-strength combination felt like a more serious attempt at supporting my nerve system.

Week-by-week

  • Weeks 1-2: Honestly, I didn’t feel anything. I almost quit because I thought it was another waste of money.
  • Month 1: I noticed I wasn’t reaching for the cooling gel as often at night. The “buzzing” felt less intense.
  • Month 3: This was the turning point. I could actually go for a 20-minute walk without that sharp, shooting sensation stopping me in my tracks.

What improved vs what didn’t

The biggest win is my sleep. Because the discomfort is lower, I’m not waking up three times a night. However, it’s not a miracle. I still have “off” days if I spend too much time on my feet or forget to stay hydrated. Using Nervala has been a steady climb, not an overnight fix. It’s also a bit pricey, which is a downside, but for the relief I’m getting, I’ve decided to keep it in my daily routine for now.

Thanks for sharing this. I’m in that ‘Weeks 1-2’ phase right now and feeling discouraged, so seeing that it took you a month to notice anything is helpful. I’ll stick with it a bit longer.

Does the 600mg of ALA bother your stomach at all? I tried a high dose once and it gave me terrible heartburn, but maybe the formulation matters.

I’ve had a similar experience with B12. Everyone says it’s the gold standard, but it just didn’t do much for the actual burning feeling in my heels.

I’ve been on Nervala for about six months now and it’s been a game changer for my morning stiffness. It didn’t happen overnight, but the results have been very consistent for me.

Can you explain what Benfotiamine is? I keep seeing it mentioned alongside Lipoic Acid but I’m not sure if it’s just another name for B1.

I actually started taking Nervala after my sister recommended it. I’m two months in and the ‘pins and needles’ feeling has definitely dialed back. It’s nice to finally find something that targets the nerves directly.

To the person asking about stomach issues: I take my supplements right after breakfast and it seems to help. Never take ALA on an empty stomach!

The price is definitely the sticking point for me. I’ve looked at cheaper brands but they usually have much lower concentrations of the active ingredients. You get what you pay for, I guess.

I’m doing physical therapy alongside my supplements. I think the combination is what’s really helping the circulation in my legs. It’s a multi-front battle.

Great write up. It’s so rare to see someone mention the setbacks and the fact that it’s not a 100% cure. Managing expectations is huge with this kind of condition.
