Hello everyone. I wanted to check in and share a bit of a breakthrough I’ve had over the last six weeks. As many of you know, once we hit our 50s and 60s, the digestive system just doesn’t seem to have the same “get up and go” it used to. For the longest time, I was struggling with that heavy, sluggish feeling after every single meal, no matter how healthy I thought I was eating. I tried those expensive probiotic capsules from the health food store—you know the ones that cost a fortune and sit in the fridge—but I never really felt a noticeable difference.

About two months ago, I decided to go back to basics. My grandmother used to keep a crock of sauerkraut in the cellar, and I remembered how she swore by a forkful with dinner. I started doing some reading and realized I might be missing those live, active cultures that come from traditional fermentation rather than a lab-grown pill. I started small, just adding two tablespoons of raw, unpasteurized sauerkraut to my lunch or dinner every day. It was a bit of an adjustment for my palate, as it is quite tart, but I actually grew to crave that zing.

The first week was a bit rocky, honestly. I had a bit more gas than usual, and I almost gave up thinking it was making things worse. But I stuck with it, and by week three, something shifted. That constant “brick in the stomach” feeling started to lift. I found myself having much more regular mornings, and my energy levels in the afternoon didn’t plummet like they used to. It’s been a total game-changer for my comfort levels and my overall mood.

What I love most is how simple and affordable it is compared to supplements. I’ve even branched out into plain, unsweetened kefir in my morning oats, which has helped even more with the bloating. If you’re sitting there feeling frustrated with your progress, maybe try the “old-fashioned” way. Just make sure you’re buying the stuff from the refrigerated section that says “live cultures” or “raw,” because the shelf-stable cans are heat-treated and won’t have the same benefits. It’s a small change, but for my 62-year-old gut, it has made a world of difference. Has anyone else found that real food works better than the bottled stuff? I’d love to hear if you have any favorite brands or if you’ve tried making your own at home.

I’ve had the exact same experience with kefir! I make my own now because it’s so much cheaper than the store-bought stuff. It really does help with that afternoon slump.

I’ve been wanting to try this, but I’m worried about the salt content in sauerkraut. I’m on a low-sodium diet for my blood pressure. Do you find it very salty?

Martha, look for “low sodium” versions in the health aisle, or rinse it quickly before eating. You lose a few microbes but most stay attached to the cabbage! Just don’t cook it, as the heat kills the good bacteria.

Thanks for sharing this. I’m 58 and feeling the same way lately. Going to the store today to look for some raw kraut.

Great update! I started making my own kimchi last year and it’s been a fun hobby. It’s surprisingly easy once you get the hang of the fermentation process. Do you find the sauerkraut helps more with bloating or just regularity? I noticed a big difference in my skin too.
