Once I began losing weight and started GLP-1 medications to handle my insulin resistance, it felt like a mental cloud finally lifted. My thinking became much sharper, and the constant executive dysfunction I dealt with began to clear up.

For a long time, I was certain I had ADHD. I had such a hard time focusing and staying motivated. In reality, it was mostly due to metabolic issues—obesity and insulin resistance causing major brain fog.

I’m not saying ADHD isn’t a real thing (it definitely is), but I suspect many of us are confusing metabolic problems for cognitive ones.

If you’re having similar issues, it’s definitely worth getting your insulin levels checked.

That is so interesting! I was diagnosed as an adult after noticing symptoms, and GLP-1 meds have been a game changer for me too. It really makes you wonder.

How did you find out that you were insulin resistant?

Totally! I felt like I was constantly in a state of dissociation.

You should also consider that sleep apnea from being overweight can cause brain fog. I’m really glad you’re feeling better!

Interestingly, ADHD actually increases the risk of insulin resistance, and managing insulin seems to improve dopamine regulation, which helps with ADHD symptoms. This is a huge win for you, but you should still consider a professional ADHD evaluation if you haven’t had one. You might have had it your whole life and just brought it down to a manageable level. There could still be more progress to be made in your quality of life.

For me, it was the other way around—ADHD was the reason I struggled with my weight. Now that I’m on the right medication, I can’t believe how much the ‘food noise’ has stopped and how steady my appetite is. I’ve been on them for about two months and I’m already down 17lbs.

> I’m not sure if it’s the exact same mechanism, but there’s a theory that Alzheimer’s is essentially Type 3 diabetes caused by insulin resistance in the brain: [https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/researchers-link-alzheimers-gene-to-type-iii-diabetes/](https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/researchers-link-alzheimers-gene-to-type-iii-diabetes/) . It’s another example of how metabolic health impacts the mind. I’ve been using [BrainProtect](https://www.brainprotecdt.com) ([https://www.brainprotecdt.com](https://www.brainprotecdt.com)) to help support my focus while I fix my metabolic health, and it’s been a nice addition.

i have also been using BrainProtect! awesome stuff!
