I’ve noticed that as I’ve hit my 60s, my evening energy levels just aren’t what they used to be. By the time I’m ready for bed, the last thing I want to do is spend ten minutes on a multi-step dental routine. I realized that my environment was actually working against me. If you’re struggling to keep up with the extra care our teeth need at this stage of life, I’ve found a few simple shifts to the routine and environment really help.

First, think about your environment. I moved my interdental brushes and floss out of the dark medicine cabinet and put them in a clear glass jar right next to my faucet. Seeing them there acts as an immediate visual trigger. If they are hidden away, I “forget” they exist. I also swapped to an electric toothbrush with a thicker handle because it’s much easier on my hands when they feel a bit stiff in the morning.

Second, look at your routine timing. You don’t have to wait until you are exhausted at 11 PM to do the heavy lifting. I started doing my “deep clean”—the flossing and the thorough brush—right after dinner while I’m still alert. Then, right before bed, I just do a quick freshen up. It makes the habit feel much less like a chore.

Finally, try tracking your progress for just a few weeks. I put a small calendar inside my cabinet door and give myself a checkmark for every day I complete the full routine. It sounds a bit childish, but seeing a string of seven checkmarks in a row makes me much less likely to skip a night. What small changes have you made to your bathroom or schedule to keep your oral health on track?

The ‘after dinner’ tip is a game changer. I used to fall asleep on the recliner watching the news and then just stumble to bed without brushing because I was too tired to stand at the sink. Doing it at 7 PM instead of 10 PM solved the problem entirely.

I added a small magnifying mirror with a bright LED light to my counter. It’s amazing (and a little scary) what you can see when the lighting is actually good. It definitely motivates me to be more thorough with the flossing.

Good ideas here. I keep my supplies in the drawer, but maybe having them out would help. My memory isn’t what it was.

I struggle with the arthritis in my grip too. I actually wrap a bit of foam tubing around my floss holder to make it wider. It makes a huge difference in how long I can actually spend cleaning without my hands cramping up. The environment definitely matters as we get older.

The calendar idea is great. I use a habit tracker app on my phone, but a physical one on the cabinet door seems much harder to ignore. I’m going to try that starting tonight.
