Many of us assume that fading vision is just an inevitable part of the aging process. While it is true that our eyes change over time, many of the most significant issues we face in our 50s and 60s are actually exacerbated by daily habits that we have full control over. If you want to maintain your independence and keep your vision sharp for as long as possible, you need to stop making these common mistakes.

### Ignoring the Silent Thief

One of the biggest mistakes is skipping annual eye exams because you “see just fine.” Conditions like glaucoma are often called the silent thief of sight because they have no symptoms in the early stages. By the time you notice a change in your vision, the damage is often permanent. A comprehensive dilated eye exam is the only way to catch these issues before they steal your sight.

### Mismanaging Digital Strain

We might not be “digital natives,” but most of us spend hours on tablets, phones, and computers every single day. The mistake isn’t using the technology; it’s how we use it.

- Failing to use the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
- Keeping screen brightness too high in a dark room, which causes unnecessary fatigue.
- Forgetting to blink frequently, which leads to chronic dry eye and corneal irritation.

### Relying Solely on Drugstore Readers

While over-the-counter reading glasses are fine for a quick fix, relying on them exclusively is a mistake. They do not account for astigmatism or the fact that your eyes likely have different prescriptions. More importantly, using them as a crutch often means you are avoiding a professional who can screen for macular degeneration.

### Neglecting Ocular Nutrition

Most people understand that heart health requires a good diet, but they ignore the nutritional needs of their eyes. Your retinas are highly metabolic and require specific antioxidants to fight oxidative stress. Relying on a standard processed diet often leaves your eyes starved of the lutein and zeaxanthin they need to filter harmful light.

### Rubbing and Physical Irritation

As we age, our eyes naturally produce fewer tears. When they feel itchy or dry, our instinct is to rub them. This is a dangerous habit that can thin the cornea or cause tiny scratches that lead to infection. Instead of rubbing, use preservative-free artificial tears and consult your doctor about chronic dryness.

By addressing these five areas, you can significantly reduce the strain on your eyes and protect your visual health for decades to come.

The eye rubbing one is so hard to break! I find myself doing it late at night when I’m tired without even thinking. I’ll try the artificial tears instead.

I didn’t realize that drugstore readers could be an issue. I have about five pairs scattered around the house. Maybe it’s time for a real prescription.

Spot on about the glaucoma. My brother lost 30% of his peripheral vision because he waited too long for a checkup. Please don’t skip those exams, folks.

I’ve been much more conscious of nutrition lately since my doctor mentioned my macula health. I started taking [VisiSharp](https://www.visi2sharp.com) a few months back to help address those root causes of decline, and I’ve honestly noticed things feel a lot less blurry in the mornings.

Is the 20-20-20 rule actually effective for people with cataracts? I’m scheduled for surgery next month but the strain is killing me right now.

To the person asking about cataracts: yes, it still helps with the muscle fatigue, even if the lens itself is cloudy. Give your eyes a break regardless!

I’d add sunglasses to this list. Even on cloudy days, the UV exposure adds up over the years and contributes to those cataracts.

Great post. I’m 64 and just got my first pair of progressives. It makes a world of difference compared to the cheap readers I was using.

The point about lighting is so true. I used to read in the dark to avoid waking my wife, and my eye strain was off the charts. Bought a small clip-on LED light and it solved everything.

Thanks for the reminder about the dilated exam. It’s uncomfortable for a few hours, but it’s worth the peace of mind.
