I have been trying to pinpoint my triggers lately and I am curious about the role of alcohol. Some people swear that even one glass of wine sets them off, while others seem completely unaffected by a night of drinking.

Is it possible that the alcohol itself causes an inflammatory response that triggers the virus? Or is the outbreak actually caused by the secondary effects, like poor sleep and dehydration that follow a night out?

I would love to hear your experiences. Does the type of alcohol make a difference, or is it just the general metabolic stress on the body?

For me, red wine is a 100% guarantee of a cold sore the next day. I don’t know why, but it’s consistent.

I honestly think it’s the sleep. Whenever I drink, I stay up way too late and the quality of my rest is garbage. That’s usually when my immune system dips.

Beer is the worst for me. I heard somewhere that the yeast or the arginine content in certain beers can be a factor.

It’s likely a combination of things. Alcohol suppresses the immune system for a window of time after you consume it. If you’re already stressed or haven’t been eating well, that dip is all the virus needs to reactivate. I try to take extra lysine if I know I’m going to a wedding or a party where I’ll be drinking.

I drink occasionally and have never noticed a connection. Everyone’s body is so different.

You should definitely start a trigger diary. Track what you drank, how much you slept, and your stress levels. After three or four occurrences, the pattern usually becomes pretty obvious.

I switched from wine to gin and tonics and noticed a huge decrease in flare-ups. Might be the sugar content in the wine?

I did dry January this year and it was the first month in ages I didn’t get a single prodrome sensation. It’s definitely related for me.

There is some evidence that alcohol can interfere with how your body processes amino acids, which might mess with the lysine/arginine balance. It’s a metabolic nightmare if you’re prone to frequent outbreaks.

I stopped drinking entirely six months ago for other health reasons, and an unexpected side effect was that my HSV-2 has been completely dormant. No tingles, nothing. For me, alcohol was clearly a major physical stressor.

Does anyone find that taking valacyclovir while drinking makes them feel worse? I’m always scared to mix them.

If you are going to drink, try the ‘one for one’ rule. One glass of water for every alcoholic drink. It helps keep the dehydration in check, which might take some of the pressure off your system.

Red wine is definitely a trigger for me too. I think it has to do with the histamines or sulfites.

I still think emotional stress is 90% of the battle. If you’re drinking because you’re stressed, you can’t really blame the alcohol alone. It’s the whole situation.

This is a great discussion. I’m going to try cutting back for a few weeks and see if it changes anything for me. Thanks for the input everyone.
