I’m coming up on eighteen months since I decided to stop chasing the magic pill for my digestive issues. At 62, I was tired of the constant heaviness and the unpredictable mornings.

I started a very basic routine: fermented vegetables twice a day, a 20-minute walk after dinner, and hitting 80 ounces of water. No fancy powders or expensive subscriptions.

The first three months were frustrating. I didn’t see much change and almost gave up. But I decided to stick it out just to see if the long game was real.

By month six, I noticed I wasn’t reaching for the ginger tea every night. My energy levels during the day started to stabilize too. It was a slow burn of improvement.

Now, a year and a half later, the difference is night and day. I don’t wake up feeling like there’s a brick in my stomach anymore. I can actually enjoy a meal out with friends without scoping out the nearest bathroom or worrying about trigger foods ruining my next three days.

The biggest lesson for me was that our guts at this age don’t bounce back in a week. It took years to get sluggish, so it took months to wake back up.

It isn’t about one specific food. It’s the cumulative effect of doing the boring stuff every single day.

For those of you just starting or feeling stuck at the three-month mark—keep going. The results are worth the wait. Has anyone else found that the boring habits worked better than the supplements?

This is exactly what I needed to hear today. I’m at the 10-week mark and feeling discouraged because the progress is so slow.

What kind of fermented vegetables are you doing? Is it just sauerkraut or are you mixing it up?

I’ve spent a fortune on probiotics and never felt much. Maybe the water intake is my missing link. 80 ounces seems like a lot, do you struggle with bathroom trips at night?

Consistency is the hardest part. It’s so easy to skip a day, then a week. I’m trying to get back on the wagon after a rough holiday season.

The ‘brick in the stomach’ description is so accurate. I used to feel that every single morning. For me, it was cutting out the late-night snacking that finally cleared it up.

Great check-in. Thanks for sharing the timeline. Most people expect miracles in 14 days because of the marketing we see.

I’m 68 and found that warm water in the morning made a huge difference too. It’s the simple things.

I’m curious about the fermented veg too. I tried kimchi but it was a bit too spicy for my reflux. Any milder suggestions?

Boring is better! I stopped buying those expensive green juices and just started eating more steamed broccoli and carrots. My wallet is happier and my gut feels about the same, if not better.

Our bodies definitely don’t have the ‘reset’ button they used to have in our 30s. It takes patience.

Did you change your diet in other ways, like cutting out gluten or dairy, or was it strictly adding the good stuff in?

The cumulative effect is real. It’s like compound interest for your health. Glad you’re feeling better after 18 months!
