I’ve spent years believing that raw kale and massive salads were the gold standard for gut health. However, lately, I noticed that these “healthy” meals left me feeling unusually distended and uncomfortable. I decided to try a small experiment over the last three weeks: I swapped my raw lunch greens for steamed or roasted versions. It’s hard to say if it’s a definitive fix or just a seasonal shift, but the immediate pressure after eating seems less intense. I’ve read that our digestive enzymes might become less efficient as we hit our sixties, making raw cellulose harder to break down. While I miss the crunch, the trade-off in comfort is hard to ignore. I’m still not sure if this is a permanent change or if I just need to reintroduce raw foods more gradually. It hasn’t solved everything, but the observation was interesting enough to share. Has anyone else noticed their tolerance for raw roughage changing as they get older?

I’ve had the exact same experience! My doctor actually suggested that I stop eating raw spinach in the evenings.

Soup has become my best friend this year. It’s much easier on my stomach than a cold salad ever was.

Cooking breaks down those tough plant cell walls, which basically does half the work for your stomach. It makes sense as we age.

I still love my salads, but I have to be very careful about chewing thoroughly. If I rush, I definitely pay for it later.

Have you tried lightly blanching them? You get a bit of that crunch back without the heavy bloating.

Are you finding this applies to all vegetables, or just the cruciferous ones like broccoli and kale?

This is a great observation. I think we often force ourselves to eat ‘healthy’ things that our bodies aren’t actually enjoying anymore.
