I recently had to make a tough decision regarding a missing molar. My dentist gave me two options: a traditional bridge or a dental implant. After a lot of research and a few sleepless nights, I decided to go the implant route. The whole process took nearly six months because I needed a small bone graft first, which was a bit intimidating at my age.

However, now that the final crown is in place, I am so glad I did it. It feels completely natural when I eat, and I love that it doesn’t affect the healthy teeth next to it. The healing process required some patience, but the long-term benefit seems worth the wait.

I’d love to hear about your experiences with tooth replacement. Did you choose an implant or a bridge? Was the recovery period a major hurdle for you? For those who have had implants for several years, how are they holding up today?

I went with an implant too about three years ago. The waiting game between the post and the crown was the hardest part, but I don’t regret it for a second.

I’ve had a bridge for over 15 years now. It has served me well, but I do find that food gets stuck under it more often as my gums have shifted. If I had to do it over, I might look into the implant.

My main concern has always been the cost. My insurance covers a bridge at 50%, but they won’t touch an implant because they call it ‘cosmetic.’ It’s frustrating because a molar is clearly for function!

The bone graft is the part that scares me. Was it painful during the actual surgery? I have some bone loss in my jaw and my dentist mentioned I’d need one too.

To answer your question about longevity, I’ve had two implants for over 10 years. They are still as solid as the day they were put in. Just make sure you keep up with your professional cleanings; they still need care even if they aren’t ‘real’ teeth.

My dentist suggested a bridge because I have some bone loss, but I’m actually looking for a second opinion from an oral surgeon. I’ve heard that implants can actually help prevent further bone loss in the jaw.

Six months is a long time! I’m not sure if I have that kind of patience, but I suppose for something that lasts the rest of your life, it’s a drop in the bucket.
