When my neuropathy first started acting up, I made the mistake of trying to power through my spring planting just like I always had. I wore my old, thin-soled garden clogs and spent four hours straight on my feet. By that evening, the burning sensation was so intense I couldn’t even have a bedsheet touch my toes. It was a major pitfall—thinking that my body could still handle the “old way” of doing things without any modifications.

Another mistake I see many of us make is ignoring the ground temperature. When you lose some sensation, you might not realize the soil or pavement is getting too hot, which can actually cause blisters or skin damage you won’t feel until it is too late. I used to think I was being “tough” by ignoring the discomfort, but I was really just risking an infection that would take months to heal.

Instead of those habits, I’ve found a few alternatives that actually keep me in the garden. First, I switched to high-top orthopedic shoes that provide ankle stability and a very wide toe box to prevent compression. Second, I moved a lot of my favorite perennials into raised beds. This prevents me from having to crouch or put weight on the balls of my feet for long periods. Lastly, I set a timer on my phone for twenty minutes. When it dings, I go sit on the porch for ten minutes, no matter how much I want to finish that row. These small shifts have allowed me to keep my hobby without the week-long recovery periods. It’s about working with your nerves, not against them.

I really needed to hear this today. I’ve been avoiding my backyard because the pain after weeding is just too much. I think I’ll try the timer idea tomorrow.

The timer idea is a game changer. I always get ‘in the zone’ and then pay for it for three days. It’s so hard to stop when you’re enjoying yourself.

I had similar issues and my doctor suggested adding a specific supplement to my routine. I’ve been taking Nervala ([i buy here](https://hop.clickbank.net/?affiliate=indigo7177&vendor=nervala&pg=cb2&tid=forum)) for about three months now and it’s really helped settle that constant buzzing feeling in my feet while I’m out in the yard.

Raised beds saved my life. I also use a rolling garden seat so I don’t have to stand at all. It keeps the pressure off my heels.

Does anyone have a brand of socks they recommend? I find the seams in regular socks really irritate my toes when I’m walking on uneven ground in the yard.

I agree about the shoes. I stopped wearing those cheap plastic garden shoes and bought some proper hiking boots with custom inserts. It feels like a lot of weight, but the support keeps the nerves from firing off so much. Also, don’t forget to stay hydrated, as dehydration always makes my tingling worse.

Great advice on the soil temperature. I never thought about that, but it makes total sense if you have numbness.

I use long-handled tools now so I don’t have to bend over as much. It helps with the lower back which seems to trigger my leg neuropathy if I’m not careful. Thanks for sharing your story!
